چکیده
Upon light irradiation, a novel dual-functional ruthenium compound releases nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). NO induces Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm dispersal liberates bacteria. The free-floating bacteria are subsequently sterilized by ROS. Therefore, the can readily eradicate mature biofilms at low concentration, which reduces cytotoxicity to mammalian cells. More information be found in Full Paper Z.-W. Mao, W. Xia, et al. on page 5453.

متن کاملTobacco Xenobiotics Release Nitric Oxide
Many xenobiotic compounds exert their actions through the release of free radicals and related oxidants 12, bringing about unwanted biological effects 3. Indeed, oxidative events may play a significant role in tobacco toxicity from cigarette smoke. Here, we demonstrate the direct in vitro release of the free radical nitric oxide (*NO) from extracts and components of smokeless tobacco, including...
متن کاملNitric oxide-induced calcium release: activation of type 1 ryanodine receptor by endogenous nitric oxide.
Ryanodine receptors (RyRs), located in the sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum (SR/ER) membrane, are required for intracellular Ca2+ release that is involved in a wide range of cellular functions. In addition to Ca2+-induced Ca2+ release in cardiac cells and voltage-induced Ca2+ release in skeletal muscle cells, we recently identified another mode of intracellular Ca2+ mobilization mediated by R...
متن کاملUsing anti-biofilm peptides to treat antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections.
Host defense (antimicrobial) peptides (HDPs) are produced by virtually all organisms and have an important role in protection against microbial infections. Some naturally occurring peptides such as the human cathelicidin LL-37 and the bovine peptide indolicidin have been shown to inhibit bacterial biofilm development. Rearrangement and substantial modification of the amino acid sequence of thes...
متن کاملBacterial flavodoxins support nitric oxide production by Bacillus subtilis nitric-oxide synthase.
Unlike animal nitric-oxide synthases (NOSs), the bacterial NOS enzymes have no attached flavoprotein domain to reduce their heme and so must rely on unknown bacterial proteins for electrons. We tested the ability of two Bacillus subtilis flavodoxins (YkuN and YkuP) to support catalysis by purified B. subtilis NOS (bsNOS). When an NADPH-utilizing bacterial flavodoxin reductase (FLDR) was added t...
